I think the "why" questions are most often not answered in this life. If you read the book of Job, he was never given the answer as to why God allowed all the tragedies he suffered. We know the "behind the scenes" information. Job did not. He was given, basically, "I am God. You are not." Difficult words. But it's reality. And yet, He is not just all powerful. He is good. It doesn't feel that way sometimes. But neither do children feel their parents are good when they're taking them to the doctor or disciplining them or saying, "No" to something they want to do that you know will only harm them. They can't understand the way of adults. Neither can we, with God.

I think we have to come to the place where we say:

Job 13:15

"Though he slay me, I will hope in him;"

He is also big enough to handle our doubts, our anger, our meltdowns. Be honest with Him:

"yet I will argue my ways to his face."

This life is HARD. But as you said, Christ is the only one and the Bible the only thing that makes sense of it all... even if, at times, it doesn't make sense. Sometimes, the only thing to hold on to is the fact that Jesus suffered too.

When I was a kid we used to sing "Kids, under construction, the Lord might not be finished yet" in Junior Church. This simple song taught me that we are a work in progress, and that the difficulties of life have a divine purpose. Later in life, I have now learned that the difficulties are so full of purpose that we should rejoice that we have them.

Feast upon uncertainty.

Fatten upon disappointment.

Enthuse over apparent defeat.

Invigorate in the presence of difficulties.

Exhibit indomitable courage in the face of immensity.

Exercise unconquerable faith when confronted with the challenge of the inexplicable.

In partnership with God, nothing is impossible.

Inspirational!!

When I hear "why me" - I always respond - why not??? I used to hope that it would happen to someone else - not me - because I had enough to deal with or so I thought. I guess I needed a change of attitude so why do bad things happen to good people? Why not?

Jenny, I am so happy for you that you feel you can rail at God! He can take it. I think He even likes it when we work things like life events out verbally with Him. Your honesty is touching and refreshing! So, glad I read your column! Your attitude is faithful! No matter what!

Thanks for sharing your heart, Jenny. I’m sorry for the way you have been treated at the hands of the church. Not all churches are true and not all who profess the name of Jesus are truly Christians. The church is composed of human beings, so it isn’t perfect, yet the enemy has placed tares among the true believers and they will be dealt with at the end of time.

All creation groans in suffering as we wait for the Day of Salvation, when everything will be restored and there will be no more sorrow. We do have free will and the enemy is doing all he can to steal, kill, and destroy as many souls as possible before it’s too late for him. So, there is evil and suffering, and Jesus told us it would be this way, especially if we are His followers. If He was reviled and if He suffered, we cannot expect less. It is in suffering that most people turn to the Lord.

I knew a faithful believer from a horrific background who, when bad things happen, asks, “What is it you would have me learn or have me do in this situation?”, rather than complaining over it. I’m not there yet, but it’s a good perspective!

I’m praying for you today, that the Lord will pour His supernatural wisdom and discernement over you, give you understanding, and make Himself known to you and your family in tangible ways. I ask Him to heal your hurts and use you to bring others into salvation.

All the best.

I totally related to this. Thanks for writing it. I also come back to "if I give up my faith, where do I go?" There is no other solace when times are dark. Bless you!

Thank you. I was in a church like you were for a long time. My sister was excommunicated because she wouldn’t move 50 miles with 2 young children after a divorce “so she could get to church every week. “. The men in charge offered no help nor would arrange housing or a means of support if she did. I left some years later. I joined a mainstream denomination but when the caving in happened so quickly at the beginning of Covid I became disillusioned and left. Then God opened my eyes to what was really going on in September 2021. It’s scary but Christ gives me peace. I’m going back now not for what attending will do for me but for what God wants me to do there. I hope and pray I hear Him. Blessings.

I appreciate you speaking about your faith. I also appreciate Steve Deace’s podcast about his faith, and encourage everyone to go listen. There are so many dark forces in the world right now, and I feel that shutting the churches down bc of covid allowed them to flourish exponentially. We need more and more people to speak of their faith and bring light to all the darkness! God bless.
